Tonight the BYD Qin L DM-i launched at an event in Xian which also saw the unveiling of BYD’s new fifth generation DM system which is used by the car. Also launched at the event was the Seal 06 DM-i which is the twin car of the Qin L and uses the same platform. There are five models in the Qin L range priced from 99,800 to 139,800 yuan (13,750 – 19,300 USD) and are as follows:

80km DM-i Leading 99,800 yuan (13,750 USD)
80km DM-i Transcendence 109,800 yuan (15,150 USD)
120km DM-i Leading 119,800 yuan (16,550 USD)
120km DM-i Transcendence 129,800 yuan (17,900 USD)
120km DM-i Excellence 139,800 yuan (19,300 USD)

The Qin L is part of the Dynasty series of BYD cars and uses the new national wave dragon face aesthetics. As such the car has a Qin character at the front underlined by a chrome bar, and there is a large grille underneath this. Interestingly the Qin L retains traditional door handles. There is a strong waistline which runs from the front fenders to the rear doors. At the back the light cluster creates a continuous stream from one side to the other and is inspired by traditional Chinese knots.

Dimensions are almost the same as the Seal 06 DM-i with the only difference being that the Qin L is considerably wider. It measure in at 4830, 1900, and 1495 mm (l/w/h) and uses a 2790 mm wheelbase. It should also be noted that the Qin L is bigger than the Qin Plus. Suspension is the same as the Seal 06 with MacPherson suspension at the front and new E-type four-link independent suspension at the rear.

BYD claim the interior is inspired by Chinese landscape paintings and the interior also incorporates various Chinese knot elements. It is a less busy interior than the one in the Seal 06. Around the gear selector are a number of physical buttons to control functions. There is a rotating 15.6-inch central infotainment screen and an 8.8-inch LCD instrument screen. Cars come with 6 airbags, ETC, mobile phone NFC key, automatic air conditioning, one touch window control for the driver’s side window, tire pressure monitoring system and a minimum of six-speakers.

Higher spec models add features such as a panoramic sunroof, DiPilot L2 driving assistance system, electric adjustable seat for the front passenger, dashcam, 18-inch wheels, 8 speaker sound system, and seat heating and ventilation.

BYD’s latest fifth generation DM technology debuts in the Qin L and the Seal 06. The new PHEV system optimizes the work between the engine and the electric motor which raises the overall efficiency. It uses AI energy consumption management to achieve fuel consumption of 2.9 l/100 km in NEDC mode and 10.7 kWh/100 km in CLTC mode.

A plug-in hybrid system it’s based around a 1.5 liter engine with maximum power of 74 kW and 126 Nm torque. Lower spec versions have an 80 km (CLTC) all-electric range  and use a 10.08 kWh battery and an 120 kW electric motor with 210 Nm torque. Higher spec versions get the 15.874 kWh battery which gives the car a 120 km CLTC range. These also use the more powerful 160 kW EHS160 motor which has 260 Nm of torque. Comprehensive range is up to 2,100 km (CLTC).

At the launch BYD chairman Wang Chuanfu presented the keys to the first owners of the Qin L and Seal 06 DM-i cars marking the launch of BYD’s 5th generation DM era.

According to the vehicle positioning and price, Qin L DM-i fills the price gap between Qin PLUS DM-i and Han DM-i on Dynasty.com. Considering that there are not many mid-size cars with plug-in hybrid power in the current market, the vehicle targets its competitors as fuel mid-size sedans of joint venture brands, that is, the Maiden, Passat, Camry, Accord and Celestial and other models. In terms of price, the Qin L DM-i is priced lower than its competitors after end-of-market discounts, so in terms of price and fuel economy, the Qin L DM-i is competitive. So, would you buy the Qin L DM-i or a JV brand fuel car? Welcome to leave a message in the comment section to discuss.
