Changan recently announced that its new pickup truck, the Changan Hunter 2024, will support mobile power station technology and will soon receive its first OTA update. Positioned as a mid-sized pickup, the Changan Hunter 2024 is priced between 139,900 and 193,900 RMB and is equipped with a 2.0T range-extended hybrid powertrain. It is marketed as China’s first mass-produced range-extended pickup.
The Changan Hunter’s fast-charging port supports up to 22 kW of external discharge power, allowing the vehicle to charge its battery while idling and simultaneously power external devices. Through OTA updates, the Hunter will add six new off-road driving modes—Snow, Sand, Mud, Off-Road Master, Crawl, and Tow Mode. It will also introduce a "Friend Mode" for the infotainment system, optimizing the in-car experience. Additionally, Changan plans to offer a variety of eco-modification kits, including versions such as the Hunter Drone Carrier, Hunter RV, and Hunter Fire Truck.
The front design of the Changan Hunter features a frameless matrix grille complemented by segmented L-shaped LED headlights. Other external features include rear parking sensors, a reversing camera, 17-inch wheels, a split-opening tailgate, fixed side steps, cargo bed tie-down hooks, a roof rack, and a spray-on cargo bed liner.
The Changan Hunter is available in both a short-wheelbase version (standard box) and a long-wheelbase version (extended box). The short-wheelbase version has a wheelbase of 3,180 mm, with a cargo box measuring 1,600 x 1,595 x 500 mm. The long-wheelbase version extends the wheelbase and cargo box length by 250 mm, with a maximum rated load capacity of 495 kg. The dual-motor all-wheel-drive version is rated to tow up to 2,500 kg.
In terms of interior design, the Changan Hunter is similar to the Lantuo pickup, featuring a dual-screen setup (7.5-inch color instrument cluster and 12.3-inch infotainment screen) with a streamlined air vent design, creating a minimalist feel. The Hunter also includes faux leather seats, tire pressure monitoring, LED headlights, smartphone connectivity, automatic climate control, cruise control, wireless charging, heated front seats, 4G connectivity, voice recognition, Wi-Fi hotspot, and remote vehicle control via a smartphone app.
What is the engine specification of the changan hunter? The Changan Hunter’s range-extended system uses a 2.0T engine as a generator, delivering a maximum output of 140 kW. The single-motor rear-wheel-drive version provides 130 kW of power and 320 Nm of torque, with a fuel consumption of 7.9 L/100 km (MIIT-rated) when using the range extender. The dual-motor model offers a combined power of 200 kW and 470 Nm of torque, with a fuel consumption of 8.5 L/100 km in range extender mode.
Powered by a Gotion High-Tech lithium iron phosphate battery pack with a capacity of 31.18 kWh, the Changan Hunter offers a pure electric range of 131–133 km (NEDC), supports both fast and slow charging, and can output up to 3.3 kW of external power.
In China, the shift towards electrification in the pickup market has been relatively modest, with mainstream models still relying on gasoline or diesel engines. The Changan Hunter remains the only production pickup in the market with a range-extended powertrain, and its competitors include the Radar RD6, GWM POER, Ford Ranger, and JMC Grand Avenue.
